Types of Diabetes in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, there are twenty types of "Prameha," a condition that is closely related to diabetes. Out of these, four types are associated with the imbalance of vata, six with pitta, and ten with kapha. The subtype, "Madhumeha," is specifically correlated with diabetes and is characterised by the presence of sweet urine. Ayurveda primarily recognizes two common types of Prameha:

1. Avarana

This type of Prameha occurs due to a blockage in the channels, caused by aggravated kapha. It is commonly known as adult-onset diabetes.

2. Dhatuksyaya

This type of Prameha is characterised by the depletion of body tissues, leading to juvenile diabetes.

Ayurveda believes that proper digestion is crucial for maintaining overall health. When the digestive fire, known as Agni, is weak, it can cause various health problems, including the accumulation of toxins, weak immunity, and an impaired ability to fight infections and diseases.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The symptoms of diabetes can vary depending on the type. Some common symptoms of type 1 diabetes include extreme thirst, excessive hunger, dry mouth, upset stomach, sudden weight loss, constant fatigue, and blurry vision. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes symptoms may include extreme thirst, unusually frequent urination, excessive hunger, unintended weight loss, fatigue, slow-healing wounds, and frequent urination.

It is important to note that diabetes can often mask the symptoms of other underlying health conditions, such as heart or kidney problems. Therefore, it is crucial to keep blood sugar levels under control to prevent complications.

Causes of Diabetes

The causes of diabetes can vary based on the type. Type 1 diabetes is primarily an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to a drop in insulin levels and an increase in blood sugar. While the exact cause is unknown, type 1 diabetes is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is often associated with insulin resistance and inadequate insulin production. Genetic and environmental factors, along with lifestyle choices, such as being overweight or inactive, play a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy, is caused by hormonal changes and the body's inability to produce enough insulin to overcome insulin resistance.

Ayurveda Approach to Diabetes

Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to managing diabetes by addressing the root cause of the condition and focusing on overall well-being. In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as "Madhumeha" or "Vata Prameha" when it is associated with an imbalance in the Vata Dosha, and "Kapha Prameha" when it is associated with an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha.

To manage diabetes, Ayurveda suggests the following approaches:

1. Ayurvedic remedies

Ayurvedic herbs and formulations can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall health. Some of the commonly used herbs for diabetes include Amla, Triphala, and bitter gourd.

2. Therapies

Ayurvedic therapies such as Panchakarma, which involves detoxification and rejuvenation, can be beneficial in managing severe cases of diabetes.

3. Dietary changes

Ayurveda emphasises the importance of a balanced and individualised diet to manage diabetes. Foods that are light, dry, warm, and bitter are recommended, while oily, cold, and heavy foods should be avoided. Consuming fruits such as apples, pomegranates, and berries, and incorporating spices like ginger, garlic, and mustard can be beneficial.
